Reading this site, using its tools or contacting us does not create a doctor-patient relationship. The author is not a doctor. Don’t delay seeing a professional, or stop or change a prescribed treatment, because of something you read here.
Supplements and medicines
Dietary supplements can interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines and can cause side effects. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement, especially if you:
- Have asthma, COPD or another lung condition
- Take blood thinners, blood pressure medicine, diabetes medicine or other regular medication
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy
- Have surgery coming up
- Are giving it to a child
In the US, supplements do not need FDA approval before they are sold, and the FDA does not check that they work. Wherever we feature a supplement, we show this statement:
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Our tools are not diagnostic
The habits quiz, pack-year calculator, quit-smoking timeline, cost calculator and breathing exerciser give general information only. A score, number or timeline from these tools cannot tell you whether you have, or don’t have, any condition. Stop the breathing exercises if you feel dizzy or unwell.
Accuracy
We work hard to keep information accurate and up to date, and we cite our sources. Research changes, and we can make mistakes. If you spot an error, please tell us. See our Editorial Policy for how we research and update content.
